The psychologist leading the backlash against self‑help | Times2 | The Times & The Sunday Times:
Erm, is this NOT also a 'self-help' book (although contrarian)?
I wonder how he managed NOT to navel gaze & still managed to write/edit/publish & even now make time to travel to UK & beyond to promote the book?
& would his kids survive adopting his view & prosper competitively outside of welfare state of Denmark?
Just content with status quo led world finance market to credit crunch (which also affect Denmark btw.). Even with mass movement like Occupy Wall Street (no need to use brain, just turn up) who dwell in the past & complain (without the intellect of devising a workable solution) meant nothing got fixed. Now Trump is aiming to even repeal the Wall street reform & Consumer protection act (also called Dodd Frank).
Guess US citizen should just "read a novel" & feel "neutral about it" & practice defensive pessimism? :-)
Very curious about this but I won't join in person despite having a ticket (can't be bothered, why make an effort?) but will watch the live stream of the talk (if I feel like it when I have a moment away from "dwelling in the past").
However, I would agreed that people need to develop enough self-confidence so that he/she is not swayed by others' views/pressure/opinions, but how could one achieve that? as Daoism teaches, is to learn, practice & find the balance or WuWei 無爲 (Just be). If so 道德經 - Dao De Jing already was encouraging this waaay back [Warring States (475 BC - 221 BC)], which was 100yrs+ before Zeno of Citium (c. 334 – c. 262 BC, founder of Stoicism) was born? am not Philosophy major though. "Dao De Jing" is free here: http://ctext.org/dao-de-jing
No doubt the developed western world will be better for following this book, as hard working guys & girls (no matter where they come from) can take over. Well done for your contribution, no doubt those parents who complain about too much homework for their children will be worshiping Svend soon.
